Song Monday! Dave Wirth: "a neccesary change of heart"

(download)

When we mixed the record, "a neccesary change of heart" was the first one we focused on; It's chaotic. Orchestral instruments, live ambient electronics, a couple of feedback guitars, and two drums sets throughout. The piano was recorded with an Avenson Audio STO-2 through a Neve 1076. Particularly awesome. Eric and I flipped out when that was dialed up. Eric quipped that the Bubble (recording studio where the orchestral instruments were recorded) probably had never seen sheet music or music stands for that matter.

People who played on this recording:

  • Saba Angel: Drums
  • Kory Cook:Drums
  • Kevin Searle: Live Electronics
  • Lots of people played orchestral instruments. I can't remember all their names. My apologies. Please post a comment if you remember being on this recording, and I will properly cred you.
  • Dave Wirth: Else.

Recorded by Eric Archer at The Wire and The Bubble in Austin, TX. Produced by Eric Archer and Dave Wirth.

Mastered by Jim Wilson, now of Airshow Mastering.

Song Monday! Dave Wirth: "february and other winter tales"

(download)

Well, it's been fun building up any sort of reputation. These next four songs are loud, nasty, feedback driven, chaotic, thick, sometimes unintelligible, brutal in a lot of ways, subtle in few ways, and slow. The piano, towards the end of this song, was a particularly difficult thing to pull off. I am glad we stuck it out and recorded it. It was the last thing to be done in the studio. Close to five years later this song just cracks me up. What I was thinking?!? I would do things so different.

People who played on this recording:

  • Kory Cook: Drums
  • Kevin Searle: Live Electronics
  • Dave Wirth: Else.

Song Monday! Dave Wirth: "sugar-crashing in a non-descript building"

(download)

This is the last song of the album/ep "II." Next week will see the start the release of four new songs of the album "I." Eric Archer was the man behind the console of these next ones. He's also a man with a pretty impressive master plan (ie, his adventures in electronics). We spent six days in the studio to capture some chaos. It was a learning experience. Next week, and for the next four weeks, expect noise, drum machines, screams, feedback, cellos, and dueling drum sets. It'll be a noisy beast.

Can't wait to release the rest of these songs and be done with it. I want bloops, beeps, screams, and drum machines. Soon.

Song Monday! Dave Wirth: "it all starts like this"

(download)

Life changes so rapidly. These songs, wow- they are pretty depressing. They were written about four years ago, and recorded two and a half years ago. Feels like a lifetime. Somehow, the sting of a song eases up a little bit. Selective memory at work, probably.

Song Monday! Dave Wirth: "I'm ok with violence"

(download)

This house, which I mentioned in the previous Song Monday post, was a loud house. The landlord had set up a guest room, complete with bathroom, right next to the garage. What that meant to a bunch of musicians was it was the new rehersal/party room. It was the site of many drunken jams until 4 am without noise complaints. Oh, memories. I remember playing this song for a friend of mine in the backyard during one of these parties. I think this is the only "murder ballad" I've attempted to write. Probably the last one, too.

Song Monday! Dave Wirth: "when men come to take the land"

(download)

There is a house located on a street in a certain city in Texas, and the area was the East. The neighborhood has since become a little bit affected by gentrification, but it seems like there is little we can do sometimes about these things. Phil and Deena (now married), and our mutual friend Colin lived in this house. It was a fun though loud house. I enjoyed it. I like how Phil and I recorded these songs. There are buses rumbling through the background of this song in particular, and the wooden floors smack you right in the face. There is also nothing like recording an album in one day. We set up the reference monitors on a dining room table, set up some mics in the living room, hung out in pajamas, drank coffee, and recorded. The first six songs of Song Monday's existence are from this one day of recording.

Myspace is Dead. Say Hello to Posterous and Song Monday.

We have come a long way in five years. Myspace, in 2005, seemed unstoppable. Now it's an unprofessional way to avoid making a website. Is there anyone who really likes the idea of dealing with this clunky advertising engine? I am officially done, as soon as they want to accept my request. Goodbye, Myspace.

Say hello to Posterous. It is simply the coolest platform you will see for blogging. It's no wonder why it is growing. For now, it's clean. Fast. Far more able to tackle growing pains, and is run by smart folks. For now, Posterous is free. We will have to see if the founders of Posterous or their financial backers want to make concessions, as companies are known to do later on in their growth. If that becomes the case I suppose I can move Song Monday elsewhere. But, I digress...

Song Monday

For the next two years, or until I get sick of it, I will release a song a week, on Monday, at http://songmonday.diehipsterdie.com. I have wanted to do this for a while. I have never shared my music in such a direct way before, and so I guess that makes me scared s**tless. I'll be putting all my crappy songs up on this site. Nothing is going to stop me.

Each of the songs are 160 kb/s, but are completely downloadable and pass-along-able. Please do not get the idea that these songs are meant to be used commercially or whatever without my permission. Applicable copyright law still is law. However, expecting people to not distribute music digitally is a bit like expecting to live through a Siberian winter with just a scarf. It's probably not going to happen. Eat your heart out, Metallica.

Much thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy the music.
